When you embark on each journey of growth in your life, you come to find that there are new things that you “need” each day to make progress on this journey.
Many times, these “needs” are obvious – more of a reflection of your body or mind’s nature to recognize that if something needs to occur, I have to first take action.
However, it is not always as obvious as “I need to be more active, so I should go for a walk.”
Sometimes, you find that your needs, mainly those deeper, emotional needs of the soul, are not as easy to see and feel.
It can take digging – within yourself, with your support in conversation, with reading and writing, in work with your therapist.
Those discoveries are always so liberating.
You can feel your body ease, your mind feel confident, and your spirit feel hope.
Digging beneath the layers of the surface of your pain, your struggle, your bad habits… it can take diving into time, into relationships, into wounds, into situations you didn’t think had such a hold on your life still.
We must dig until we strike the point of discovery – as soon as we make contact with that point, we feel that body, mind, and spirit relieve.
My most recent discovery of need was one that was three years in the making.
It also took digging through 4-5 years of time, understanding what occurred during that time, how each situation shaped where my needs are now, and how I can heal from that once I gain traction.
It’s funny, because when you make this discovery and feel that relief, this is often the point when you have the most work yet to do.
But the joy is found in hope – it is that knowing although this next journey will require a lot of work and challenge, you will soon feel that you know how to heal.
You will soon be at a point, amidst this work, that your body, mind, and spirit are not just relieved in discovery, they are relieved of their pain. They are relieved of their anxiety. They are relieved of their lack of awareness. They are being fed what they need in order to not just survive, not just to live, but to truly experience a life you deserve to live.
One that is filled with peace, not chaos.
One that is filled with self-love, not self-hatred.
One that is filled with hope, not despair.
One that is filled with joy, not depression.
One that is filled with security, not anxiety.
One that is filled with support, not loneliness.
I am still working on feeling these truths.
Our body, mind, and soul know what we can achieve.
It is truly about feeling those truths and being able to attend to your needs in order to drive that into the depths of who you are.
As I embark on this newly discovered need, I am hopeful that relief will come through the work I put in to address that need.
I will keep digging – there’s more than just one need that I will need to discover in this journey, but thankfully, my shovel is not digging a hole for myself to sit in.
My shovel is digging for discovery – a journey that in itself inspires hope to my soul.
And most days, that is enough to keep going, even when we come up empty-handed in our search.
